Amy Hills (Indiana)

Amy Hills is based at 2R2, Hendricks County Airport-Gordon Graham Field, Indianapolis, Indiana.

My name is Amy Hills. I have been absolutely fascinated by flight for as long as I can remember, in particular warbirds and the history of flight. I am not from an aviation family, nor did I know any aviators before I began my own journey. My husband discovered Discovery Flights last year and bought me one from the local flight school as a birthday gift. I was immediately hooked and started my training toward private pilot within a few weeks. I own a business out of my home and pay for my training with that business income. I have two young children, ages 6 and 3, and am a stay-at-home mom to them by day, run the business in the evenings, and do my training in every spare moment I can find. I was able to complete my initial training in just under a year and got my Private Pilot’s license after taking nearly 12 weeks off when I tore my ACL and required reconstructive surgery and recovery.

I am so excited to get my taildragger endorsement as well as an instrument rating, as soon as I can afford to do so.

Ratings: Private Pilot SEL

Aircraft flown: C172 w/G1000, C172, Piper Warrior, RV4, Citabria. (Both taildraggers were assisted as I am not yet endorsed).

Dream taildragger: RV4 & North American T-6 (Please don’t make me choose just one!)

Thoughts on taildragging: I have made some great friends at my home airport that have taken me flying in their tailwheel airplanes and fun is quite the understatement! I never thought I’d want a tailwheel endorsement when I began my journey, but now there is no question in my mind, and I’m currently working hard to save money and find a qualified CFI and airplane to get my endorsement as soon as possible.
