Jan 2022 Andrea McGilvray, 5 Taildraggers and Counting
Continuing our month long flying adventure across the Lone Star State of Texas, today we met up with another passionate lady taildragger pilot, Andrea McGilvray. Andrea is based at Hondo, Texas, KHDO, a former Airforce base 40 miles west of KSAT, San Antonio.
For someone who has been flying a relatively short amount of time, just 6 years, Andrea has immersed herself in aviating and discovered her passion.
She is the current guardian of 5 taildraggers, each pictured below, and is a past owner of an ultralight and Hatz Biplane.
She is also a past LadiesLoveTaildraggers scholarship winner doing aerobatic training with Patty Wagstaff in Patty’s Super D.
I could not be more impressed with Andrea who remains humble in her accomplishments and anxious to learn more and improve her skills. She has earned her A&P mechanics license, and is maintaining all 5 of her aircraft.
We’re here to fly our RV7 and see all things Texas, currently staying in San Antonio, the 7th largest city in the U.S. Today we headed north a quick 80 miles to visit the state capitol of Austin, another incredibly large metropolis and the 11th largest city in the U.S. I was surprised to learn Texas is actually home to 4 of the largest cities in America, Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Yep, everything really is bigger in Texas!
