Come FLY with me!

Anybody up for a Fly-out?! I have several fly-ins on my calendar this next few weeks, including AirVenture, but group fly-outs are a fun thing to do too. Here are two I’ll be part of and you’re invited to come along!

Lake Michigan Trip, August 23 – 25, 2013. This is a 3-day flight around Lake Michigan with overnight stops in Manitowoc and 83D, St. Ignace. Come join us for 3 fun filled days of flying around the lake. We’ll be making several stops at interesting places along the way and stopping every couple of hours so it’s really just a string of short hops. The last day is a beautiful scenic flight along the Michigan coast so bring your camera. Our flight originates at KHFY, Greenwood Municipal Airport on the south side of Indianapolis but you can join us anywhere along the route. We’ll fly west around the Chicago Class B airspace then up the lake to Manitowoc, KMTW for our first overnight stop. Our lunch stop will be the airport restaurant at KRPJ, Rochelle, IL and a good place to hook up with anyone joining us.

Our second night is at St. Ignace which is just a short hop across the water to Mackinac Island. There will be plenty of time for a visit to Mackinac Island Airport (MCD) to explore the island and buy a pound or two of fudge to take home. The landing fee is $10.50 but well worth the price of admission. Just be sure to depart for the mainland by sunset or you’ll be spending the night!

The trip is free of charge and meant to be fun for everyone. Thank you to Alan Gluff and Tom Heimans of EAA Chapter 1354 who have organized this trip for several years and invited us along. Make your own motel reservations at the Best Western Lake Front at KMTW (920-682-7000) for Friday, Aug. 23 and Best Western Harbor Point at St. Ignace (800-642-3318) for Saturday, Aug. 24. This hotel sits directly on the water and has a great view of the island. All rooms have a balcony that overlook the lake. Be sure and ask for the “Greenwood EAA Chapter” rate.

Contact me at if you’d like to join us or have questions.

Circle Indy Grass Strips Fly-out, Saturday, August 10, 2013. For anyone who lives in the area or can make your way to Indianapolis, I’m organizing a group fly-out to only grass strips. We’ll be starting our day at 79II, Sauer-Harter Field, Greenfield at 8:00 a.m. Plan on donuts & coffee and checking out the progress on the 3 Davis Aircraft restoration projects in the works. From Harter we’ll be circling Indy landing and exploring a variety of strips most of us have never been to. I’m still working on where our lunch stop will be so stay tuned!

Indy snipWe’ll end the day back on the tarmac at KMQJ for a hangar cookout or car pool for dinner out. Either way, expect a fun flying day filled with lots of soft grass landings. I’ve got 3 extra bedrooms at my house for anyone wanting to overnight Friday or Saturday. Please contact me at to sign up!
