Dec 2013 Olivia Henwood: News from New Zealand
Thank you to New Zealand lady taildragger pilot Olivia Henwood for sending in this update and beautiful pictures. This world is a beautiful place!
I have just moved to Mount Cook in the South Island of New Zealand. It is a very beautiful place right amongst the mountains. There is an airport there which only has a couple of scenic flight companies operating off it now, including Mount Cook Skiplanes.
Well I got a ride on one of their flights this week, in the Pilatus Porter – a taildragger of course!!! The pilot knew I had a license so he told me to jump in the right seat (no dual controls though!).
The flight was incredible, we flew the whole length of New Zealand’s longest glacier, over lakes, past the high alpine huts and the mighty Mt. Cook itself. At the top we landed on the Tasman Glacier and got out to kick around in the snow!
I completely lost track of time and I was disappointed when the airport came back into sight! I guess I will just have to get on that plane again before I leave here!
Happy flying!
Olivia
