Three Tricky Little Cessna 185 Airstrips

This video is from the New Tribes Mission blog and forwarded to me by Cy Galley. The pilot is Brian Pruett who along with his wife are missionaries serving in the Philippines with Aviation. Brian says “This post is for all the pilots and dreamers who enjoy this kind of stuff. I filmed some landings and takeoffs at three of our more interesting airstrips. We are getting into rainy season now and I am learning that these airstrips are completely different when wet. It’s not only the slippery surface that’s a challenge, but all the rainy weather and low clouds make for a challenging trip as well.”

    Good question. And then leaving those flaps down after touching down, unless the ground’s too soft. The tires are too small for rain forest bush work. He needs a set of 8.50X6’s minimum then he could use the Johnson bar to drop all the flaps on touchdown and really get it stopped quickly. 40 deg of flaps on a 180 or 185 allows for a nice steep descent rate.

    You have to wonder way he’s dragging it in so low. What in the world are those flaps for? Very interesting though. Thanks for posting.
